Two questions.  Any idea on how I can get people to become aware of my site and is it legal for companies to advertise on my site or do I need a license?

Then go back and whack your URL into the main search engines you get when you hit the search button on the top of your browser. You do this by hitting the "add URL link. They all have one.

There's no license necessary for taking advertising.
