ya-newswatcher

i mailed this to Brian Clark but he doesn't seem to give support (at least
that´s what i assume since the only result from mailing to
<baclark@enteract.com> is that the mail bounces back :-) anymore so instead
i post my question here and hopa someone can help me...

in yuor manual for newswatcher 2.3.0 you write

>As mentioned above, each user or news server needs its own preference file
>and user group files. It is not necessary to duplicate any of the added
>YA-NewsWatcher files or folders. To share filter, nickname, and table
>files, simply make aliases for the ³YA-NewsWatcher Settings² and
>³YANewsWatcher Tables² folders you wish to share, move the aliases into
>the folder containing the second preference and user group files, rename
>the aliases to ³YA-NewsWatcher Settings² and ³YANewsWatcher Tables², and
>you¹re done. The individual files can be shared in a like manner, by
>placing properly named alias files within the second ³YA-NewsWatcher
>Settings² and ³YANewsWatcher Tables² folders.

if you look at my attached screenshot, i believe my file-hierarchy is
correct according to your manual and should work. however, when i launch
the program by double-clicking "Newswatcher Sub SU" i receive the error
message "error -120". i click ok to go on and receives the usual "an error
ocurred during tha startup process. you will be able tho adjust the
preferences etc". when i after that quit the program i got the message "the
«ya-newswatcher settings» folder could not be found or created". everything
works perfectly well on with my other set of newswatcher files, folders and
document, so my question to you is, obviously, what am i doing wrong???

thank in advance
david

since this is a non-binary group i can't attach any screenshot but this is
how my folder hierarchy looks:

News Solace         (Folder)
   NewsWatcher Prefs
   NewsWatcher Prefs.bak
   Newswatcher Sub Solace
   YA-NewsWatcher Settings <----------------
   YA-NewsWatcher Tables   <---            I
News SU             (Folder)  I            I
   NewsWatcher Prefs          I            I
   NewsWatcher Prefs.bak      I            I
   Newswatcher Sub SU         I            I
   YA-NewsWatcher Settings    I  alias to-‹-
   YA-NewsWatcher Tables      -- alias to

the reason why i'm not using ya-nw 2.4 is that it seems to have problems
with filtering messages, i use a very effective filter in some
binaries-groups that kills all messages shorter than 100 lines. this works
perfectly well in ya-nw 2.3 but 2.4 doesn't seem to "use" this filter - all
short, as well as all long messages are shown :-( so please dont ask me to
upgrade (or tell me whats wrong...) ...

again thanx in advance
david

anyone answering this message, could you please mail me a private copy of
your answer aswellas posting it here?

Whoa, Tarzan...too much info to digest at once. Error -120 is:

-120 dirNFErr     Directory not found

I'm not familiar with the program you are using, but it seems you've somehow referred to a folder that doesn't exist in the place you indicate it should.

Would gladly email you with the comment, but I don't have your address.

Well, I looked at my setup for YA-Newswatcher 2.4 and found it to be different.  Judging from the information given, i would say one of the following 3 things are incorrect:

First, I'm not sure if the NewsWatcher Prefs I I should have the I I in it.  First thing I would try is to rename the file, removing the II (same for the backup (NewsWatcher Prefs.bak I I) and NewsWatcher sub I I.

If that doesn't work, try renaming everything exactly like the origional -- In fact, make sure EVERYTHING except the enclosing folder is renamed exactly like the origional.

Third, replace all alias with copies of the origional (named exactly like the origional).

If that doesn't work, the only other option I can see (and yes, I know you don't want to...) would be to upgrade.  There might be a bug in the program that is preventing the multiple user settings file function to not work.  It is possible that if this is the case, it may have been corrected in the newest release.

let me know if it works...
