I have heard that there is a problem with the serial port of the early Powerbook 5300's. Could someone please explain this to me, as i have a client with the symptoms.

Thanks in advance,

The early models of the 5300 were plagued with many problems.  Just to name a few were super slow very slow bootup, system freezes, serial connection problems, plastic casing cracking on the active matrix display, etc., etc.
Apple support will fix most of the above by calling them and telling them your serial number of the laptop.  Once getting the laptop back upgrade the SW to 7.5.5.  This will speed up the bootup, and all should be fixed.
