When you visit http://www.ca-probate.com/counter.htm, you get a list of FREE web page counters. Every teller is installed in a different way. So you get instructions of how to install a counter at these pages.

Most counters have a line which puts a IMG on your screen. By putting the image on the screen, a program is called. This program counts the number of visitors.

If you can't find a counter you like. Maybe bacause you need that companys logo on your site or it's not reliable.
Do you know if your server got some CGI scripts?
If it do it probably got a counter script. It's only plain text but it's much better bacause your home page doesn't have depend on another server.
But you probably thing that a text counter is boring. Then I have something for you. I've made a little Javascript that tranforms a CGI counter to Images. You could make your own images(or use my images) and get the counter to look exactly as you want it.
You will find that script on my homepage. http://home1.swipnet.se/~w-17666/
