printing problem

I'm having problems getting my PowerMac 6100 to use the serial ports.  Whenever I try to use one (eg printing to the Printer port) I get a message saying that the port is already in use.  I've tried using CommCloser which didn't help.  Is this a hardware problem or is there anything I can do about it?

Have you tried turning off Appletalk, rebooting and then asking it to print?  Do you have fax software operating? Try turning it off if so.

I think it's more like to be a software problem than a hardware one.  You could also try starting with extensions off and seeing if you can get a printer to respond. Alternatively, if you use Extensions Manager, cut back on all extensions except for the vital ones, and test it again. If it works, then you know you have an extensions conflict that will need to be resolved by adding them back in one at a time.

I'm submitting this as an answer because I believe that one of these will work.  If not, then of course reject it and someone else can try.

Good luck.

PS. It pays to reboot after trying each or any of the above before testing it (or as well as testing it without rebooting!)
