Apple Doc-Viewer files going bad?

I've got all the Inside Mac books in Doc-Viewer format, and just the other day I started having problems with some of them.  When I open the file, Doc-Viewer thinks there's only one page (which is blank).  The files are all their original sizes, the index has all the topics, and doing a "Save as text" command gives me a text file with all the information.
This has happened with some files, and not with others in this group.  Do Doc-Viewer files go bad for some reason?  Something corrupt in the resource fork (the unusable ones _do_ have a smaller resource fork, although they have all the necessary resources).  I'd rather not re-download the affected ones, especially since both the Toolbox Essentials ones have died, and that's a lot of megs to download.
  Thanks for any help.
