Font Problem

Some of my fonts with multiple face font options are not showing in the applications font menu, nor are they recongnized by the applciation. For example, Avant Garde has four fonts in its family:

However, whether I have the font suitcase installed via Suitcase or the Fonts fold only the AvantGarBoo shows in the menu of most applications. I have checked 4 or 5 different applications on 2 different systems and they all only show the single AvantGarBoo font. HOWEVER, in Adobe Illustrator
5.5 it shows all 4 font options shown above. Thus I do know the font suitcase does contain the necessary files needed to show all 4 faces.

This is not true for all of my fonts. I have some fonts that show the numerous face optons they should and others that behave like Avant Garde and only show the book or standard font face when the it should actually show many more.

I have tried this on two different systems, a Mac IIci and a 5300 and the problem is the same. I am also using Adboe Type Reunion and have tried disintalling that, but this does not help.

I am at a loss as to why this may be. I would welcome and and all suggestions.

It looks like the fonts that have these problems were "harmonized" with a program such as Suitcase or Master Juggler.

To see if this has happened, open up the screen font that you have problems with (such as your Avant Garde) and look at each of the faces.  If a face has the weight designation in brackets after the name, then it has been harmonized - which means you may want to replace just the screen font suitcase (the printer fonts are OK). - Example:  "Avant Garde (bold) or Avant Garde (bold, italic)" instead of Avant Garde Bold.

The reason some people had their fonts harmonized is that it saved menu space.  If they needed an italic version, they would choose "italic" from the Style menu and the harmonized font would automatically pick the right printer font.  This sometimes gives Service bureaus a hard time because it would sometimes conflict with their normal screen fonts.  Adobe illustrator handles fonts screen differently which is the reason why you can see all the weights as they should be.

Hi David
Unfortunately, I have the same problem with some of my fonts.  At this present time, there is known fix to me for harmonized fonts.  I don't expect one to appear and the only way is to replace them from original files.
