MacOS and Win NT filenames

We need to copy many, many files from an Appleshare server to a Windows NT 4 server and vice-versa.

At presnt we can do so, but lose the long file names: for example if we copy this_is_a_nice_name.doc to the NT box we get a file called this_i~1.doc which isn't nearly so nice.

Any way around this? After all NT4 and MacOS both use long names now.

The only answer I'm thinking by now is to compress the files (using zip or tar) and decompress them in the other units...
A good choice is to use a removable HD formatted using Win95 Fat and mount it into the MacOS using DosMounter95
