Adding Dec OSF3.2 Swap Space

Below I provide some information about the disks mount of my DEC Alpha running OSF3.2. I want to increase the size of the swap space to a total of 400 megabytes, but have no idea how to figure out where OR HOW to do so. I know the final step --- just add a line to /etc/fstab. But I have no idea how to
1) figure out where to put it. I would be willing to change part of a normal disk to a device file if necessary
2) figure out if parts of /dev/rz0 are truly free. because, disklabel indicates that dev/rz0b is unused, BUT /etc/fstab lists it as swap

From your fstab, it seems that you've got just one 2G disk.

If this is so, you cannot add any additional swap since, YES, your disk is already fully in use.

Disklabel sais rz0b is unused because you didn't make a file system on it, nonetheless the OS uses it as swap space.

So your rz0 situation is:

rz0a: the / (root) partition
 blocks 0-131071
rz0b: the swap partition
 blocks 131072-458718
rz0g: the /usr partition
 blocks 458719-2050859 (and here your disk ends:)

I still am not sure if I could take part of /usr and reclaim it for use as swap space

No, you cannot: having a look at swapon(8), you may read: "DEC OSF/1 does not currently support paging and swapping to a regular file. All swapping and paging areas must be block special devices."

So, increasing the size of the swap area becomes a metter of modifying the disk partitions to the sizes you need.

In your case, since you have one hard disk only, which is also the system disk, you could simply go this way:

1. backup significant data (data, programs you may want to reinstall, config files, etc...);
2. reistall the OS from scratch;
3. while reinstalling, chose a custom installation and customize disk partitions for your needs; you should leave partition 'a' as it is by default (it is needed for boot informations and for root), then make up two more paritions, one for the swap, the other for usr, having the sizes you need.

Also, keep in mind that block are 512K in size - which also means you've got a _1G_ hard drive...
