Network is dead, BROWSER error?
We have a NT4.0 Network, 1PDC, 10WS all with SP2
Sometimes (once a week) the Network is dead. Clients cannot access the server. On the server everything besides the network works. If I open networkneighborhood sometimes I get the list of all computers but when I click on one the window freezes. Taskman says: no answer
Just before this happens the eventlog has this entry:
ID 8033: Der Suchdienst hat eine Wahl erzwungen da der Hauptsuchdienst beendet wurde.
In english must be somethinkg like: The computer search service (or browser) forces an election because the main search service (browser) was closed.
I checked the registry and my PDC is the Domain Master Browser. I used net stop browser / net start browser, but it did not help. Only rebooting helps.
All WS have MaintainServerList=Auto
Can this be the cause? And why does the MasterBrowser stops working?

I have a 3c59x 10MBit Ethernet PCI Busmaster.
I read somewhere that Busmaster must be turned off. Ist this true?
I will try the latest driver.
Do you have a reference (URL) to these 3com problems?

I can swap the card with another machine.
Did you try the new driver for the 59x ? Does it help?
At www.3com.com I read about 3com having problems with certain motherboards and the solution was to switch of Busmaster. But the error described there is not for me, so I think Busmaster can be left on.
Leave your e-mail notification for this question on, so we can exchange some more info's if necessary. 1st I will try your suggestion.

Hi,
I did not experienced the error again (with the 3c590). The reason maybe that I
- had luck
- Configured some computer to be the backup-browser
Then SP3 came out with an updated version of the 3C590 driver. Maybe there is a real problem and thy fixed it.
Nevertheless I changed to 3C900 to be on the safe side. When I get this error again I will post it here.

Sometimes NIC from 3Com have problems with the NT-Drivers.
If you have a 3Com NIC try the latest driver-version.
