Does anybody know where to get C/C++ sources for real-time
playing of AVI and/or MPEG files.

Check out http://www.visiblelight.com/mpeg/software
they have binaries and sources for MPEG on various platforms.
You should also get the Mitchell/Pennebaker book (I think that it is just called MPEG), but it is really great if you want to get an understanding of the whole flow.
