I've a USR sportser 28.8 modem and use Earthlink as my ISP
What's necessary to avail myself of the
X2 speed and will Earthlink recognize it?

Check with www.usr.com about earthlink accepting X2. If it is not, it will just be a matter of time before they do. You need a hardware upgrade, ROM I think, which you can get for free if your modem is bought after a certain date, (different throughout the world) or you can pay a small amount to get it upgraded.
