How do I know how or when to lock on the target? What box turns solid? Do you get a tone verification, also?

Thanks
Bob

There is a smaller solid box than the dashed line box which shows a lock-on when in hellfire weapons mode. It is the same one that locks-on when using the cannon or any other weapon, they just added the dashed line to simulate real weapon systems LOAL (Lock On After Launch) firing mode.
No, there is no tone when you have a lock, just watch your left MFD for the target description. Hope this helps!

Thanks for answering the first part.  What about "How do you lock on to a target?"  The box nevers turns solid. (Maybe I get shot down too quickly?)
Thanks

Hmmm, the small box should turn solid when you have a valid lock. If you are talking about the large box not turning solid, well the large box never turns solid, just the small weapons lock box. The large dashed box seems to be confusing a lot of people, especially those that have played AH-64D Longbow.
