I am a newbie to 3D Studio Max.  I have to create several 3D objects and cover them in a material that I have saved as a BMP file.

First, how do you create a pyramid shape?

Second, how do you import a BMP file as a material?

Third, how do you create a shape that looks like a 3D circular gear?

Lastly, do you know of a good website where 3D Studio Max users exchange information?

Thanks!!

1. To create a Pyramid:
   *Go to Create/Standard Primitives/Hedra
*Create it in a view. It will look like a diamond. So we need to remove the lower part.
   *Select the hedra
   *Go to Modify/Edit mesh
   *Select the bottom point
   *Click on Misc/delete
   *You have a pyramid.

2. To import a BMP in a material
   *Go to Material Editor
   *Click on Maps
*Next to Diffuse press on none
   *Form the list select Bitmap
   *Open your bitmap
   *Save the library
   *Back to Max
*Select an object and choose 'Assign material to selection'

3. To create gears:
   Go to http:\\info.tuwien.ac.at/raumsim/vrp/ipas/maxfree.htm
There you can find an excellent IPas that creates gears.

4. You can find the info that you want by entering 3DSMAX on Yahoo or Altavista. There are houndreds of web sites and newsgroups on this subject

Good directions!  The website you suggested is not at that location anymore, however...
