viewing garbled files

I have jpeg and also stuffit expander and stuffit Delux.  I'm still having trouble, however expanding those files from newsgroups that are just a bunch of letters and numbers.  I also can't get "htm" files to open when I download them.  Where am I missing it?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You may also need the decoding programs ZipIt, Base64 and uuUndo, depending on the version of the above expanders you are using. They are all available from www.shareware.com

If you are using Newswatcher as your newsreading program (highly recommended), you can tag the article containing the image and go to the Special menu, selecting "Extract binaries". It should do that for you no trouble.

As to not getting htm files to open, the only program that will do that is your internet navigator program (apart from programs to create web pages). Simply go into Netscape or Navigator, go to the File Menu, and open the file.
