I am setting up an automated-reply system for an e-mail helpdesk. How can I have the computer run a program whenever new e-mail is received in a certain accout?
I am using Digital Unix running on an Alpha.

Yes you can!

Assuming that sendmail is doing the mail delivery, you can set up an email alias that will feed your email through a program. Sendmail maintains an alias file (usually /etc/aliases) that can be used to create email aliases for users, or groups of users. The usual syntax is:

admin: josv, frans, erik

to denote that all mail sent to admin@somehwere should be sent to all three users (josv, erik, frans). However, sendmail also allows the following syntax:

helpdesk: "| myprog"

This means that whenever sendmail detects mail for helpdesk@somewhere, it starts the program myprog and feeds the email message as stdin.
