how do i set the background fi an applet to transparent so that when it runs i can still see the text that has been animated appear without seeing the grey box around it

As far as I know - you cannot set the background to transparent - that 'Color' doesn't exist in Java :)
So unless you already know the background color of the html-document in which the applet is embedded - your lost.
But you could have the html-page give you the color as a parameter for the applet.
