System 7.6 & Quadra 950 - problem

Installed basic new system files and now we cannot shut down or restart (only by turning power off then on). Sometimes the screen freezes, sometimes get a bomb message, either 'Finder error, unimplemented trap' or 'finder, error 10'. We have not installed any RAM recently, the fault still occurs when we start with extensions etc. off. We did have a diskdoubling programme installed but this was removed when we installed System 7.6. We also took off Norton Utilities and SAM. The Mac starts OK and the programs run OK. We just can't turn it off! any ideas?

I need some additional information.

Was there a RAM upgrade done on this machine recently?

Do you have Disk Doubler (or another compression utility) installed?

Are you able to get the bus error with extensions off and all external SCSI devices disconnected?

Autodoubler compresses invisible files, but won't uncompress them. That's why I hate it.

I'd bet anything one of the files that got compressed was the invisible file "shutdown check." Game over. Clean System install. Sorry, that's your only choice.

The random hangs are likely the result of bad RAM. Remove the recently installed RAM. If it quits hanging all the time you've found the culprit.
