WAV files on a Mac ???

I keep getting a "sound file is not valid" message whenever I attempt to play a WAV file.  I have both "LiveAudio" and "Quicktime" but neither will play anything for me.  "LiveAudio" gives me the message but "Quicktime" only shows a broken film icon on the monitor.  Both formats load the file but neither will play it.  I have checked to see that both are installed and one or the other is enabled.  Java and Javescript are turned on and my "helper" file says that my WAV file is set up.
I have a powerMac (7.5.3) with 88M of RAM and I am using Netscape 3.0 as a browser.  I recently downloaded "SoundApp" but have yet to install it.  Can't Macs handle WAV files ?  or is it me ?  Please advise, thanks.........
I viewed the answer for the question on 5/24 which deals with the same problem.  It didn't help me.  I already have "Quicktime" and that doesn't play either.

soundedit 16 opens wav files and so do many shareware sound editors. do a search for "wav" on amug as there are a few players posted there.
