Applet to mail(again!)

I've seen it asked here and numerous other places on "how to mail from my applet?".  I've followed the examples given and they all bomb with a security exception.  I contacted earthlink.net (my server) for a proper host name and got 3 different answers and each bombed.  They now consider these questions to be in the field of "teaching or advising" a user and no longer want to answer.
ANYBODY out there actually mail from an applet using Netscape through earthlink.net?

An applet is restricted in what it can do - in particular it can only open net connections to the server it originated from. It can't send mail to any other servers. Trying this causes security exceptions.
Options:
1. the applet communicates with a program on the server (servlet,
CGI) which then does the actual mailing
2. use a signed applet
