Using java to telnet

I'm looking for the code to use a java applet, running on a
web server, to be able to connect via telnet to some
computer.  I must be able to supply the telnet address and
the port.  I then want to sent some string to the
connection (ie simulate keyboard entry) and be able to
receive the answer from the server.

Any help / comments ?

There is a java telnet client with code and explanation at

http://www.hotwired.com/webmonkey/code/97/24/index2a.html

Note that they use it to connect to a chat server, so you may want to change its look.
