Where is the problem? Word(Perfect) has a build in ascii export feature. Just use it. It worked for me on Solaris. After producing the ascii file on a PC or Mac ftp-transfer it to the Alpha in ASCII mode.

However, let's assume that you have no access to a PC or Mac (very unlikely though), i.e. you somehow got a Word file from somewhere and can't convert it to ascii. Try to look into that file with the normal Alpha text editor. If the file is not encoded or encrypted the text will be readable. There are special formatting characters in between, but they are no real problem.

If you still can't read the file(s), contact me again. If there are only few files I could convert them for you.
