LILO hangs my system

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and solved it: for some reason, my computer always hangs when LILO runs.  I get the first 2 letters, "LI", then the system hangs.  If I choose "linear mode" during setup, then it spits out 0101010101010101010 forever :)  I've tried making boot
disks and installing LILO in my master boot record, with the same results..

I'm sort of a newbie to this stuff, so as much in depth info as possible would be cool, and I don't mind having to reinstall it... :)

My system has 2 IDE hard drives and a SCSI jaz drive on ID 4.

Any ideas!!?
Thanks,
mike

This is what  lilo/README  says:

..
L <error> ...   The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started,
but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The two-digit error
codes indicate the type of problem. (See also section "Disk error
codes".) This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry
mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters, see section "Disk geometry").
LI   The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
    installer.
LIL   The second stage boot loader has been started, but it can't load
the descriptor table from the map file. This is typically caused by a
media failure or by a geometry mismatch.
