I found MANY bugs with the default pop3 daemon, particularly related to temporary files.  Your problem MAY be due to a connection not being completed and then being retried without having been disconnected.....

As for the WORKING answer.... I upgraded to qpopper 2.2, (Qualcomm) which is also GNU....  No cost and I have had no problems with this server.... There is now a version 2.3 I believe.

Hope it helps.... Infact, the redhat contrib directory on sunsite has qpopper-2.3-1.rpm so you can upgrade without having to compile the source like I did!

Your on the right lines -

I managed to work it out.
It needed a temporary directory called /tmp/.pop and
it couldn't create it.

If the server is heavily used check to make sure it cleans up its temporary files as the version I had before qpopper was very bad at this.
