Linux Networking question

I've set up Red Hat 4.2 and want to use a PPP connection. I've got a USRobotics 33.6 modem (not Winmodem). I've set
up my modem with modemtool and have set up the connection
with netcfg. However, every time I try to connect, it does nothing--doesn't even dial--and prints
tcgetattr(): I/O error
to /var/log/messages. I'm fairly new at this and don't have
the first clue as how to fix it. Any help you could give me
would be great. The port is set with modemtool as Com2, which works fine when I boot to the Win95 half.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I've tried to use dip, netcfg, modemtool, anything. Any of
the ones you can interact with (like dip and modemtool) just
don't do anything. I've checked dip switches, BIOS PNP setup
(nothing to shut off there). ls -l /dev/modem shows cua1...
