I need to implement a combobox that acts as the one in the CFileDialog "Look in", so that when the user drops down the list, a full drive and folder tree appears. Is the any shortcut or encapsulation for this?

If you have new COMCTL32 there is a new ComboBoxEx control which supports a tree control in a drop down.  This would need some encapsulation in a MFC-like class and then be derived from to do what you want.

The alternative is to do it yourself with a regular (owner drawn) combo box.  I have a C++ sample app that shows how to fill an (owner drawn) combo box with a drive and folder info.

I can send you this sample if you want - pelase send me your address
