DirectX 5.0 Init Failure

I have attempted to load DX 5.0 many times both from internet downloaded file and off the MS Flight Sim 98 CD with the same result. I get a DirectX Setup Initialization Failed followed by a DirectX setup error -9. I have a Sony PCV-90 with an ATI 3D Rage graphics card.  I have DX 3.0 loaded but FS98 needs DX 5.0.

locate the program "dxsetup.exe" on your machine, run it and watch the output. If any of the lines DOESNT say "certified" the driver is not in any way guaranteed to work with the version of direct X you are using. If you have any uncertified drivers, yo umust get an updated driver from the company that made the device that fails the certification check.

Okay, I got everything certified, except one thing...Game Compatible Device (emulated) which shows no driver number (0.000) and I am still getting the same errors. I noticed that lotsa people are seeing the same thing but they can load DX 5.0 but I still cannot.

It is a Modem Line Wave Device.  I have seen a few people in the newsgroups with the same device. It also seems like they have DX 5.0 installed already, though i still get the -9 error when I try to run dxsetup. Is there a manual way to setup DirectX?

I havent seen a manual HOWTO to get it running. I think it is time to start contacting tech-support for either your hardware or MS.

Thanks for all your help.  You have given me some real good information. If I find a solution I will let you know what happened and how to fix it.  That way we both become better "experts".
