connect speed problem about terminal software

i am using Red Hat Linux3.03 and i found the speed for terminal software connection like Seyon and minicom is extremely slow, my modem is 33.6K, and in win95 on the same machine(486 50 DX) the speed for connection is satisfactory, why it is so slow(few characters per minute) in linux, i believe the settings are ok. i am worrying about this because i haven't setup the PPP yet, if PPP is still so slow then it's a disaster.and i found the PPPd from sunsite has many problem with my version of linux(pppd2.2.0g), do you think i need to download a newest version of kernel for recompilation ?

If I recall, RH3.03 came default with kernel 1.2.13.  Although
very stable, this kernel is almost "ancient" by todays Linux
standards.  You should still be able to find a .rpm for with
the ppp binaries that is compatible with your kernel, and
with a little tweaking, ppp will run fine.  But I still
recommend upgrading to a 2.0.xx kernel.  It may be a lot
easier if you just reinstall, rather than trying to upgrade
460 packages.  You can get RH 4.2 off the net for less than
five bucks.

reinstall will take a lot of hassle, the kernel IS 1.2.13 now. i have 3 OS on my PC and i am not sure reinstall will be smooth or not( do i need to fdisk again the linux partitions? i have 4 partitions for linux now)
the current point is the connection speed, so do you think just upgrading kernel will do the job?( i am also not sure the new kernel's compatibility with other packages, sorry, i am a dummy to linux now)

If you just upgrade your kernel alone, you will run into a
bunch of compatibility problems with libc - you'll go crazy -
trust me.

You don't have to fdisk if you want to reinstall - just tell
it to format when doing the install, and it will wipe out all
the other stuff for you.  Make sure you back up whats important
first.

Good luck :)
