How to put today's date in a <input> tag

I have a form and I need to include the
<input type="date" value="***">
*** as being today's date . It should automatically capture today's date and replace the *** .

Anyone know how to accomplish this?
Can this be done with javascript ? If so can anyone give me the code for it?
