external CD-ROM

I was interested in getting an external CD-ROM drive(mac) Someone told me that his CD-ROM drive does not let him record the music off of a music cd disk, through using a sound recording software such as Sound Edit 16, when the disk is played in his external CD-ROM drive.(please note that I'm NOT talking about a recordable CD-ROM
Drive)

I have used various types of CD-ROM drives but never encountered nor heard of this kind of problem before. Is this true?? He said that some special feature is needed for the CD-ROM to be able to heard by the software.

If someone can let me know what's up-I'd appreciate it.

I'm not sure about my anwser, but I thing that this happens because you can not make a audio connection to the sound card like with an internal CD-ROM.
If you think about it a external CD-ROM is like an internal CD-ROM without the audio cable connected to the sound card and not pluged on the computer case.
I wish I helped you (a little). If not reject the anwser and sent an e-mail with a more detailed question to... tasgeo@freemail.gr

I think, tasgeo, you're definitely on the right track. I'm going to think and research some more-seems this happens with some externals and some not...If I find more about it, I'll let you know.   Thanks.
