3DFX Problem

I bought an Orchid Voodoo card a few months back and have had nothing but trouble. It works in DOS based games if you close down Windows95 first. Under Windows it works about one time in 20-30 attempts. This is the case with most games and the demos from 3DFX. It also gives an error in GLQuake (glwCreate Failed) and won't run. This is very frustrating so any help will greatly appreciated.

Note: Pentium 166, 64 Meg RAM, AWE32 card, 4Meg Virge graphics card.

I have installed the latest set of drivers from the Orchid web site. Also DirectX 5. I have tried it with various versions of the drivers. None seem to work.
The closest it has come to working is with NO drivers loaded. GL Quake worked most of the time like this. The problem is that none of the Windows based games work without drivers.

Seems like you need DX5CPL urgently. Here is couple URLs if you
don't have it:
ftp.axs.com.au       /incoming/dx5cpl.zip
ftp.esoterica.pt     /pub/mirrors/tucows/files/dx5cpl.zip
ftp.vein.hu          /pc/win95/sysutil/dx5cpl.zip
ftp.prolink.de       /pub/win95/dx5cpl.zip
ftp.cise.ufl.edu     /pub/pc/misc/Windows95/dx5cpl.zip

Unpack it and put CPL file to \Windows\System folder (if I remember
correctly). Then run Control Panel, you'll see big yellow X sign.
Dblclick it and disable hardware acceleration in Direct3D tab, also
in DirectDraw tab. You may increase debug level as well. For DX5
it's recommended that you use S3 Virge driver, NOT DX5 one.

I do not wish to disable hardware accelaration, that is why I bought the thing in the first place. I will try the Control Panel extension and see what happens.

Meanwhile, anyone have any other suggestions.

Just another note. What I mean by "doesn't work" is that when you attempt to run a game the screen goes black, the relay on the Voodoo card clicks, and the system reboots immediately.

In GLQuake, after the glwCreate message, Windows comes back. If you try it a second time though it either reboots or locks up such that a reset is needed. After this has happened, you need to cycle the power before anything will use the card, even DOS games.

Thanks busuka. It is now working. I loaded the DirectX Control Panel extension and it worked.

I have now loaded the latest set of drivers again and tried it with all the games and demos I could find. Everything works!

Thanks Again

Of course, I couldn't do so until you commented again. Heres your points.

I'd have given you an excellent if you'd explained (in technical terms) why this fixs the problem and just what the conflict may have been in the first place.

Thanks Again

After awarding you all my points, I got home on Wednesday (7th) to discover that nothing works again. I have changed nothing at all.
Its back to locking up when you try to use the 3DFX card. Even the test button in the Desktop Settings properties box causes a lockup.
I will wait until I've got some more points in a few weeks and restart this question.

Did you installed after this something ? Anyway, try to reinstall
DirectX 5 again, but don't let it change ANY drivers (video, sound).

No, I installed no drivers. I did install several demos of games for the 3DFX card.
I have done some more tests. Flight Sim 98 works fine, Fatal Racing works fine. GLQuake gives the error glCreateContect failed. Motorace locks up, all 3DFX demos (from a "BOOT" mag disk) lock up.

I am wondering if this is ever going to work in a stable fashion. I want it so that ALL the games work correctly ALL the time. Is this possible?

Meanwhile thanks for your ongoing assistance, I will try re-installing DirectX tonight. I assume that the install on the FS98 CD is OK?

Depends. I recommend to take one from Microsoft. Since original
release they applied several changes. I believe URL is:
http://www.microsoft.com/directx
Also I heard that here is two versions: "core" and full. Take only
"core" version. If you have problems with uninstalling of DX5, I
have complete text from Usenet, how to do it (pretty long).

PS: I feel myself somehow "guilty" that I have answered question
and it not worked at the end.

Thanks, I'll get the one from www.microsoft.com and try that. Don't be concerned about it not working, it has been a very unstable setup from the start. I've just got to keep going and hope I can eventually find a setup that works in my PC.

Meanwhile, a few more bits of (possibly) relevant info.
Does Drivespace cause a problem.
Is there a problem with AWE32 cards (a friend mentioned this possibility).

Drivespace: low chances. If you don't use it, you can rename file
DRVSPACE.BIN in C:\ to smth. else, it will give you economy in
memory.
AWE32: 50/50. I heard couple of times that SB cards has some type
of "hidden" conflict with busmaster drivers. OSR2 have them by
default. To resolve it, need to remove busmaster drivers and sound
drivers in Safe Mode, then pull out SB from case, reinstall
busmaster drivers, insert card back, reinstall sound drivers.
