NHL 98 joystick calibration probs.

I'm having a terrible time with NHL 98 under Win95.  The
problem is that my Gravis Gamepad Pro loses calibration and
during gameplay, the game goes into instant replay mode
and repeatedly scrolls thru all the camera angles.

I've contacted their support about it and they have no clue.
I've got the latest drivers for everything and I'm at a loss.  My system is a P166, 40Mb RAM, 12X CDROM, Sound Blaster 32 PnP, DirectX5, Win95, #9 Revolution 3D(Matrox Millenium was used initially w/ same result).

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, solutions?  Any help would be appreciated, cuz I'm really wanting to play NHL 98 for longer than a few minutes.

Actually solution for your problem quite simple.
Cause: DirectX 5 buggy joystick driver.
Solution: replace joystick driver with DirectX 3 one.
Detail:
- Enter \Windows\System folder
- locate file VJOYD.VXD
- backup it to some location, or change its name, say to VJOYD.VX
- take DirectX 3 install package
- locate file VJOYD.VXD inside and copy it into \Windows\System
- reboot Win95

If you have problem in Cotrol Panel: you dblclick on joystick icon
and nothing happens, then copy file JOY.CPL from DirectX 3 into
\Windows\System folder.

You can find DirectX 3 on almost every Win95 game CD-ROM with
not-so-hot :) game (for example C&C: Red Alert has)

Hope this helps.

Busuka, thanks for the info.  I tried your suggestions and,
unfortunately, it didn't fix my problem.  This problem only
happens in NHL 98, not any other app. that uses my Gravis
Gamepad Pro.  I was able to find a copy of DX3 on my Neverhood
CD and followed your instructions with the same result.  Anymore ideas?  Thanks again!

OK, try change joystick controller from Gravis to Microsoft. I
don't remember exactly now, how to do this, but ways are: Control
Panel -> Joystick and try to change properties. Or enter Device
Manager (right-click on My Computer -> properties -> tab device manager)
and search for Input devices (or smth). With your feedback what
exactly you have in these areas, we will arrive faster.

Well, I switched back to DX5 joystick drivers, first of all.  Not sure if I should have, but should I switch back to DX3?
When you say joystick controller, do you mean my gameport?
In my device manager, there's no joystick listed there, only a
gameport associated with my soundcard.  Oh, and when I installed my Gamepad Pro and it's drivers, my standard joystick CP applet
was removed and replaced by the Gravis JOystick applet.  I do
have one called Game Controllers that was put there after I
upgraded my sound card driver.  Not sure what to do to change
drivers from Gravis to MS(I'm posting from work and I'll
check it when I go home).  Any ideas?

Hehe, I'm also posting from work, and don't have Win95 to check.
So I'm post things from memory. Your joystick applet called JOY.CPL
and itinside folder \Windows\System. Did you tried to replace it
with DX5 one (backup it first!) and change Game Controller ?

I had a similar problem with FIFA 97.  Select the Game Controllers icon from Control Panel and clear the check box marked 'poll interrupts' (or something like that).  It might not be there though because I'm using a beta of Win 98 and I hadn't noticed this option with Win 95.

if you go to the EAPRORTS site you can download the patch for the game that should fix your problem.
