You must do it like this:
GetTextMetrics(Canvas.Handle,Metrics);
where Metrics is structure of type TTextMetrics
then You check :
Result:=(Metrics.tmPitchandFamily and TMPF_TRUETYPE)<>0;
if result=true then font=truetype;
