File Extension Glossary

I'm looking for a source on the Web or a book that explains what the different file extensions mean and what their purpose is, such as .wsl,.mdb and on and on...

Thank you very much.

greybone,
The important ones for you to know about would be the executable ones, i.e. EXE, COM, and BAT.  These files actually cause the computer to perform a set of instructions when they run.  There are many other file extensions, as you know.  Some are simply the abbreviations for data files, or a name chosen by the programmer to represent documents, pictures, or other information.
You can reject this if you want to let others give you a website which I can't help you with.

Ralph
I noticed that I'm not quick enough with the trigger to get an answer in before someone else locks it up!  Oh well, here it is anyway
Cheers

Magigraf,
True enough.  I simply enjoy helping other folks to avoid some of the headaches that I've seen with my computers.
The points really don't have any bearing with me since I can't ask questions with 'em.  (Wish I could, 'cause I keep mine run down reading PAQ's)
Sorry for taking up your space here greybone....
Have a good one,
Ralph

Bear in mind that any file extension is not exclusive. Anyone can write a program which defaults to a particular extension. How about the following additions:
.WPD - WinWorks word processing document from PFS
.HTM - HTML file
.GZ - GNU zipped file
.PNM - portable bitmap file
.PS2 - Adobe Level II PostScript file
.RAD - Radiance image file
.RGB - Raw red, blue, green bytes
.YUV - CCIR 601 1:1:1 image file
