GUID - Is not a variable but rather an acronym for Globally Unique IDentifier.  It is a number generated for use by COM/OLE interfaces to identify themselves to applications.

LPDIRECTDRAW - Is also not a variable but a type identifier for a DirectDraw COM interface.

I'd suggest you get a good book on COM and then another one on DirectDraw.  I can recommend Inside COM by Alan Rogerson (Microsoft Press) as a good foundation for any kind of COM programming.  After that, I'm not sure about any good DirectX books but I'm sure you will find several on the bookshelves these days.
