I wrote my own mail client and Web browser and I wish to make these program the default one.  That is when a user clicks on an email address on a Web page I want my mail client to be invoked.  I think it is something in the registries but not sure what.

Take a look at the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command
defines the program to be used when mailto is clicked or executed from the command line/run dialog box.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html (Default) string value point (if IE is default) to htmfile.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmfile\shell\open\command is the command line to be executed when a HTM file is clicked.
