If you must share a single phone line and have the computer receive FAXes, you need to get one of the phone-line sharing devices available on the market.  These devices will pickup an incoming call and "listen" for the tones generated by an incoming FAX.  If present, they will "ring" your computer and it will pickup and get the FAX.  Otherwise, it will ring your telephone and you will pickup and talk.  They work fairly well but are not foolproof.  If you really can't afford a 2nd phone line they can be a decent compromise.  Don't buy a cheap one, however, some of the ones out there are just plain junk.  Expect to spend at least US$100 for one that works well.
