Strange Desktop Appearance / can't correct

I am running a PowerMac 7500 (with 604e card), MacOS 8.1 and a fairly routine set of business applications.

After uploading the new version of Global Village Fax and Surf Express I now have
+  Files in name order are REVERSED - Z to A - ONLY in the Hard Drive window (all other windows are normal).
+  The Hard Drive window opens with the scroll bars in different colors taken from the background or any graphic file that happens to be up on the desktop when the window is opened (sometimes in a moire pattern and sometimes a duplicate of the image)

Here is what HASN'T fixed the problem.
+  Zapping PRAM
+  Rebuilding the desktop (both with the key combo and with TechToolsPro)
+  Changing the sort order on the View menu -- even an intervening restart doesn't fix the problem
+  Reinstalling MacOS 8.1
+  Removing the extensions for Surf Express
+  Removing the extensions for Global Village
+  Reverting to MacOS 8.1 extensions/control panels only

Any ideas ... this is the most bizarre thing I have seen and is a real headscratcher

ok the names in reverse is EASY...just above the vertical scrollbar on the right is a little arrow that either points up or down. click it and your name order will reverse. The scroll bar thing sounds like a screen redraw problem. Either the picture is too big and you dont have enough memory or you have an extension conflict. try starting with all extensions off except the desktop pictures one and see if it still happens. if it does then you have other problems..try running norton disk doctor. if it doesnt happen with all extensions off cept DP you have an extension causing the problem. take them out one by one and eliminate ones that cause problems.

The arrow is probably even DOCUMENTED but I missed it .... dummy me.  Thanks.

Have been trying to eliminate the problem with the scroll bars but have yet to find the answer.  Will keep looking for it.
