In my CDocument class in OnOpenDocument() how do i specify a default directory and file extension for the files to be shown in the open file dialog box?

Use SetCurrentDirecory to set default directory. Extension is termined by your application document association. To change this behavoiur you must override CWinApp::OnFileOpen
