My definition of a communication server would be a server that is used for dial in access, and or one that will provide a modem pool that network users can use for access out.  We currently have two communication servers, one is manufactured by CUBIX.  This server is one large unit, containing four drawers, each drawer contains 10 PC Cards.  The PC Cards are computers with harddrives, ram, and two ports, we have an NIC Card (Network Interface Card), in one of the ports, which enables the PC Card to attach to the network.  The dial in access is acomplished by breaking down a T1 line into 24 channels, an 800 number is assigned by AT&T to roll to each of these 24 channels.  The other Communication server we have uses the same type of access, (T1, 800 number), but it is just an NT Server with the RAS services operating.  (RAS = Remote Access Service).  Check out   WWW.CUBIX.COM for more details and pricing.

Hope this is the answer you were looking for.
