Application Icon

How do I control the icon that the explorer initially choses to display next to my application?  I have three or four embedded icons in the app, and the explorer picks the second one for some reason.  It uses a different (correct) one in the application caption bar, as well as for registered document types of the application.  But how can I control the application's .exe  icon in the explorer?  Thanks!

AS far as explorer is concerned, you can pick whatever icon you want for a shortcut .. either from the application itself or from elsewhere.

If you have an AppWizard generated MFC program, then the icon for IDR_MAINFRAME (for MDI/SDI) gives you the application icon

There is also a second icon defined for the document type.

Your problem may be that you have totally diferent icon images for diffrent icon sizes.  Icons simulatneously hold multiple images at various sizes.  The system picks the best size for what it required (eg. desktop icon, taskbar icon etc) and uses that (scaling approriately).  Perhaps you have change the icon bitmap for ONE image size, but not for ALL of them, so it looks like the wrong icon is being displayed.

By default, the first icon in your resource file will be the application icon (IDR_MAINFRAME), and the second will be the document icon (eg. IDR_xxxTYPE)

I manually edited the rc and moved the desired icon first in the list, and that did the trick.  Thanks!
