I Have just replaced the motherboard and cards in a 386 PC by 486 ones. Now working fine.

I also want to increase the size of the 386 hard drive.

I have found another 386 hard drive with acxactly the same type, but it is in a "pocket computer".

Can I take the hard drive out from the "pocket computer" and join to the PC hard drive? How?

Yes if you set one hard disk as master and the second one as slave (jumpers on back of the hard disk) If you post more info about your hard disk I will give setings. You connect them to the same cable you use whit you hard disk next enter bios and set new hard disk in your bios

Hi JBURGHARDT

Thank you for your help.

I think my first problem is how to join two drives PHYSICALLY. Apart from the wire built in the drives, do I need to get something else? And, which plug join which socket?

Following is the information I have:

On the hard drive of "pocket computer":
      NEC MICROCOMPUTER
      MODEL Pro Speed 386SX
      ELETRICAL RATING
      PC 20V 2.0A 40W
      PC 12V 3.0A 36W
      (USE ORIGINAL Ni-C8 BATTERY)
      Serial no. 0500791HC

On the hard drtve of the PC:
      MODEL M2611T
      P/N B03B-7065-B301A
      FUJITSU LIMITED
      MADE IN JAPAN

      PART NO. B03B-7065-B301A
      SER. NO. 526490 DATE 1990-5
      RATING +12V, +5V
      REV. NO. B0123456789
      006630 526490

In the Setting of the "pocket computer":
Type 17, cyl 977, Hd 5, Fre 300, LZ 977, Sec 17, Size 40

In the Setting of the PC:
Primary Master:  the same as the above.
Primary Slave:    None
Secondary Master: None
Secondary Slave:  Nome

Cheers.

You need an ide cable that has three sockets on it, one of the sockets connects to your motherboard ide socket, another connects to your primary masterdrive and the other connects to your primary slave. If your ide cable ( the cable from the hdd to the mb) has only one socket on it you will need to get a cable with 2 connectors on it.

To nigem:

Thank you Nige for your help.

I know nothing on the hardware :-) What is an ide cable?
In my PC, only two cable connected to the hard drive: one for electricity another one from the card.
Do you meant I need a cable with two socket and one plug: two socket for two drives and one plug for the card?

Cheers.

For more info about your hard disk go to theref.c3d.rl.af.mi/hard_drives/h_m2611t.html
It look like it is very small. If I was you I will go to www.onsale.com/computers.htm and get nice big hard disk they had 600MB for $30. Ide cable is the cable you see connected to hard disk you should see loose connector 40 PIN . You need to change SW2 on hard disk to make it master (setings are on the page I give to you.

Hi JBURGHARDT

Thank you.

Are you sure the above address is correct? http://www.theref...? I just can not get there :-(

Unfortunately, I am in UK. They don't like to post items to UK. I may try to find a cheap hard drive here. The one you mentioned isn't a new one I think....and how to make sure that can work?

Cheers.

Try this theref.c3d.rl.af.mil/hard_drives/h_m2611t.html. I saw some nice prices on computer stuff in UK too look for auction in UK on www.yahoo.com. I am flying to Europ on this friday so I see if there any low prices on computer stuff but I heard that prices are higher in UK (all the taxes) than in US. It look like they have loot of nice SCSI hard drivers 1.3 GB for $39 to $49 but they not going to ship them to UK. You will need new SCSI card. With 486 and new motherboard you will be able to have up to four hard drives or three and cd-rom. You should not have any problems if you use autodetect for new hard disk

Hi JBURGHARDT

I have just got an Email from someone who is complaining the price he spent for a HD of 250Mb in London: £45. He found another place in London with much cheaper price, but by comparing with US they are still very expensive: 250M -> £22, 1 Gb -> about £70, 2.3Gb -> about £80, 4.3Gb -> £105 and 6.5 Gb -> £140. (note: "£" is UK pound)

Thank you for the site address, I am going to try now.

Cheers.

Hi JBURGHARDT

I have just visited the site and seen the setting. However, that is for one hard disk only. Can you tell me where is the similar site for the other hard disk:

NEC MICROCOMPUTER
MODEL Pro Speed 386SX

Cheers.

I think that you could find buyer for your computer and for the money you get you will be able  to buy nice hard drive, since you don't need it anyway.

Hi JBURGHARDT

Sorry for the delay. I have got the hard disk off the notebook and found the correct information is:
CONNER
PERIPHERALS
CP -344
and I have visited the site theref.c3d.rl.af.mil/hard_drives and found the product! Unfortunately, there is no "Setup Instructions" for it :-( Do you think it can not be used as a second hard disk?
