There are a few types of signs, but they are all basically the same thing--Images.

To display a sign such as a banner, first you have to create the banner using some kind of drawing/photoshop program.  One popular one is LViewPro (www.lview.com).

Then, the code is really easy:  <img src="imagename.jpg">

Or, using it as a hyperlink:
<a href="your_link.html"><img src="imagename.jpg"></a>

Your question was a little vague, so if this doesn't help, could you clarify it a little?

I think he means those windows where you enter login name and pw.

I think it's CGI, but I have no idea of how it works.

I have got a JavaScript that will ask for a pw.
It won't look as proffesional as what you asked for, but it'll work...
JS is the only (I think) solution if your Internet provider doesn't allow you to use CGI's and such.

Go to http://www.arosnet.pp.se/agren/martin/temp.htm for an example.
Try a password: dagbok, vm, image or ljud.
In fact those are names of my subfolders.

If you want to use the script, just name a folder as your password and put all protected files inside it!

The typical box that you seem to be talking about is generated by the browser when the server sends an authentication required response.  To get this to happen you need either to create the appropriate response with your cgi or set up your web server so that it determines that the page needs authentication and sends the response.

You can make something very like it by creating some JS that opens a window with a form that asks the question but it is not scure since JS is visible to all.  If the form sends the info down to the server and lets a CGI handle it then you may just as well let the server-side cgi send the appropriate response in the first place and avoid the problem of your own, non-standard JS.

I am sure that this is not what you want to hear but if you go to the usenet you will see that you are certainly not alone in the question and that my response is basically a summary of the responses that have been provided there.

Could you test it again and tell me what the message said?

>i want to know if i could start my own.
Do you want your own password box for your own site with your own password etc?
If so I'll give you all you need.

Sorry, didn't understand your question the first time.  If you want a sign-in page similiar (exactly like) the one here at Experts-Exchange, I can show you how to do it.  It has nothing to do with JavaScript, HTML, Java, or cgi.  It has to do with HTTPd authentification, and is quite easy to do if you have telnet access to your account.

It involves creating a file called .htaccess and another called .htpasswd and placing them in the directory you want to have protected.  The .htaccess file determines who can have what type of access.  The .htpasswd file contains the encoded password for each user.

I don't know if you are able to do this with aol, though.  A real  ISP will let you.  If you have aol, you might be stuck with the very insecure method of JavaScript, of which there are several examples scattered around the internet, and also listed in the PAQ list right here on EE.

Another method involves the use of cgi scripts, but if you can't telnet in, then I doubt you can run cgi scripts either.

I guess you want bigelos solution, since that's what you asked for... I must admit that it looks much more proffessional.
If your ISP doesn't allow it or you want my Script anyway, just let me know.

BTW, the page you were sent to is in Swedish, so that's probably why you didn't understand anything :-)

Actually, I just realized that I have a big project due, and I can't help you with anything right now.  Go to Excite (the search engine) and do a search on
Experts Exchange javascript password html

and it should bring up a ton of examples

Cheers!

To install the password Script do the following:

Create a link at your home page:
<A HREF="javascript:login()">Enter my password protected site!</A>

At the top of your page paste this piece of code between <HEAD></HEAD>:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- HIDE SCRIPT FROM OLDER BROWSERS
  function login() {
  pw = prompt("Enter your password.", "");
  if (pw == null) {
    // User pressed cancel
  }
  else if (pw == "") {
    // An empty string is not a valid pw!
  }
  else {
    window.top.location = "http://www.domain.com/~beanigirl/" + escape(pw) + "/index.htm";
  }
  }
// STOP HIDING -->
</SCRIPT>

Now, you must decide a password.
Create a folder in your home page directory and name it as your password, eg. 'lrigeinaeb'.

Put all your protected files in that folder and name the first page 'index.htm'.

Now enter your home page (from disk) and click at 'Enter my password protected site!'
A box will show up asking you for the password. Enter 'lrigeinaeb' and press OK.

Hope you understand the instructions.

Do you get any error messages when you look at the page in your browser?
What do they say???

Maybe you could upload the page to the net and I'll have a look at it.
