Hello;

hope you can help me with my connection problem.

I have a USR Courier V everything external

I just upgraded with the V90 standard : USR 20mHz V7.3.14

but now everytime I connect to my ISP: Cybergate
I only connect at 28.8

before I got 46.6 all the time with X2

I tried different settings like S58=32 to disable V90 but still the same 28.8

I called different line test numbers and my modem seems to reacts fine with V90 & X2 numbers
see at the end of messages for examples.

also I need to reinstall the modem with the correct inf file but I don't know which one I need to use since now USR is 3com
do you have an idea of the correct inf file for me?

in my windows/system I have:

3comapr.inf
3comserw.inf
3comwave.inf
Mdm3com.inf
Mdm3cmvo.inf
Mdmusb.inf

if you have an idea

probably reinstalling the modem would do the trick.

There's nothing wrong with your modem.
Contact your ISP.
They could be in the middle of their
upgrade from X2 to V.90 standards.
My ISP had problems with their upgrade,
which caused me to get only 28800 connects,
and your ISP could be having similar problems.

I doubt this.  US Robotics "invented" X2-servers,
and so their V.90-servers should be 100% compatible.

> do you get more than 28.8 now?

Every time!  :-)

It took my ISP about two weeks to make the X2-to-V.90 upgrade,
i.e., much longer than they expected.

I have a USR NON-"WinModem", which needs no software-drivers.

I got the response from my ISP:

here:
All our servers are v.90 compliant. If you are having problems with only
one of our numbers it may be a problem with the phone lines itself.

I tried other numbers on the Cybergate network some I get the V90 and some I get V34

I don't understand why I can't get back at least the X2 connection I used to have.

any ideas?

also I have a Courier V everything ext
do you know of any init strimgs that might put my X2 connection back?

Thansk!

Unless you use a modem-initialization string
which tells the modem to use X2,
and not V.90, negotations,
your modem will try to setup a V.90 connection.

no I tried to connect with no string and got a V90 with some # and X2 with others and V34 with others but with my local ISP # I just get V34 whatever I put strings or not.
I suspect they have old X2 code that intefers with V90 see article in:

That's an "old" article (March 5, 1998).

Given that your ISP has just upgraded to V.90,
I suspect that a quote from that article:
> And [when] we upgrade the server code,
> the problem goes away completely.
applies, i.e., as your ISP upgrades to V.90,
they should be using the newest-available V.90 code.

Have you contacted them?

Post the telephone-numbers (with area codes)
which you have tried,
and the results you received.

At Ms. Bergen's "dime-a-minute" rate,
I can dial each of them, and see what results I get.

Yes I got a V90 connection now
here is the response from the POP surpervisor, he finally took the time to look into and fixed last Monday.
So the point is never give up on an ISP support and send a lot of emails ;-)

According to the Total Control software every
modem and HiPer card had the latest software revision, v.90.  However,
not every individual modem was actually using it for some reason.  It
looked like the HiPer cards were all running v.90, but some of the
quad modem cards weren't.  I uploaded the software to them again, and
telnet'd to a few ports to double check it.  Here's a sample  ATI7:
