You have a mailbox labeled trash where your deleted items are
kept until they expire, your time to keep deleted items is past or you empty your trash.

What was wrong with the answer.  You can restore (undelete) any
mail item from your trash folder (or whatever your version call it).  In Dos/Windows client it is Trash.

The document was deleted completely. It was not in the Trash either. It needs to be restored from a backup tape.

I did it once and it worked and twice with little success.

You may slso try the technique that apply from TID2909781.  to restore from backup you need to consider what will happen to the other users of the database file that users message is stored in.  The mailbox of all the users that db file is associated with will revert to the state it was at the backup time,  all messages sent or received since then will not be readable.
