If you want to start KDE using startx
you should correct your ~/.xinitrc file
If you want to start KDE using kdm/xdm
you should correct your ~/.xsession
Usually I linked .xinitrc to .xsession
and here is this file
------
#!/bin/sh

PATH=~/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/ucb:/usr/5bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/java/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:.
export PATH

CLASSPATH=.:/usr/local/java/lib:classes:/home/www/servlet/classes
export CLASSPATH

QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
export QTDIR
KDEDIR=/usr/local/kde
export KDEDIR

PATH=$PATH:$KDEDIR/bin
export PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$KDEDIR/lib:$QTDIR/lib:/usr/X11R6/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

umask 002

exec $KDEDIR/bin/startkde
------
