Sound off after waking from sleep mode

Every time the computer goes to sleep, the sound is reset to zero. I have read the answers about a dud speaker (which I don't have). The same thing happens with external speakers connected. PM7300/200 80mb RAM OS 8.1. I have updated the firmware on the hard drive, clean reinstalled the system three times and have very few non Apple extensions.

7300's do not sleep properly. On MacOS 8.1 you should be able to sleep the monitor and the HD without any side effects (prior to MacOS 8 this model had severe issues with the HD sleeping). Sleeping the motherboard is where the side effects occur.

I assumed this would be fixed with the HD firmware upgrade I installed, but testing has revealed that although this fixes the crashing problem I had on wakeup, the sound one persists. Your suggestion to turn off system sleeping has rectified this problem too. Yippee and thanks!
