I assumed this would be fixed with the HD firmware upgrade I installed, but testing has revealed that although this fixes the crashing problem I had on wakeup, the sound one persists. Your suggestion to turn off system sleeping has rectified this problem too. Yippee and thanks!<br />

Every time the computer goes to sleep, the sound is reset to zero. I have read the answers about a dud speaker (which I don't have). The same thing happens with external speakers connected. PM7300/200 80mb RAM OS 8.1. I have updated the firmware on the hard drive, clean reinstalled the system three times and have very few non Apple extensions.
