index file

What is index file ? Is it the file for storing index field of a table ?
But, how can I create or update this file ?

You've got such file for a DBASE table for example, if you have indexed fields in it, but such file isn't being created for an Access database for example, because all it's data is kept in one file (mdb). You don't have to worry about this file, because it's maintained by the db engine, and it's created and updated if necesary when you create indexes for your table using an application or SQL commands, and when you add new data so the index needs to be updated too.
