How to sample/subscribe to listserv group

My news reader group list has indicated there exists a particular user group
 of interest to me:
bit.listserv.[subject]      (the subject happens to be e-europe)

How can I 1) sample 2)subscribe  to this group?
The ordinary procedures for regular Usenet groups do not work.
[Further, is 1) possible without 2)]?

I guess I knew that much... What I want to know most is thed
address for the first e-mail in order to subscribe. There are NO
further instructions where I got "bit.listserv.e-europe".

Following this last advice, when I click on  bit.listserv.e-europe a
box pops up (on my Netscape 4.0 browser):

This Location (URL) is not recognized:
          news:bit.listserv.e-europe
Check the Location and try again

Moreover, the same thing happened with a random set of 5 other links
to bit.listserv.(xxxxx) chosen from this URL page. Also, can there really be
a mix of newsgroups and listservers on this uniform format list of links?

I see this isn't quite as quite as straight-forward as I had thought...in the hope
of keeping you interested I've doubled the point value.
