I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Shortcuts are implemented through an OLE interface called IShellLink. There isn't a direct API to do this, strange as it sounds. (MS has written such an API, fCreateShellLink, and included it as a utility in the Visual Basic package, but you have to have STKIT432.DLL  so it's not a general solution)

MS has a Knowledge Base article that gives an example of creating a link and then modifying the icon. It is Q179904, at

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q179/9/04.asp

Hope this helps, good luck!
